Ship's Articles and Membership Handbook

Ship's Articles -- Table of Contents

All references to people in this document are male for simplicity of language. There is no intention whatsoever to slight or accentuate any gender.
These articles describe the organization of the chapter, outline the ground rules upon which the club will be run, and provide orderly rules for the administration of the ship.

Article VII: Experience Points

As each member participates in one or another aspect of STARFLEET life aboard the ISS Kidd, he earns Experience Points (XP), which are used primarily for advancement to the next higher pay grade.
Additionally, however, the XP recorded over a given period of time (usually a calendar year) may be used as a factor in deciding which crew members deserve annual awards. See Appendix B.

Earning Experience Points (XP)
The base XP award for most activities is one XP. There are situational bonuses that can increase the award. (see XP Bonuses)

XP TABLE: ENLISTED

Picture
Example: (E-3) Crewman Jones wants to advance to Petty Officer 3rd Class (E-4). He currently has 41 xp, and he needs a total of 101 xp to be eligible for PO3, so he has to earn 70 xp.
At any time, an enlisted member may choose to "go Maverick" and become an officer. His XP carries over, but he is required to pass the required courses to be promoted to the rank indicated by his XP.

Example: A Petty Officer Second Class decides to become an officer. He has 230 XP. His XP indicates he should become an O-3 (Lieutenant), but in order to do so, he must first pass OTS.  Until he does so, he will be promoted to the lowest rank for which he currently qualifies: Midshipman. Upon successful completion of OTS, the officer will be immediately promoted to Lieutenant.

XP TABLE: OFFICERS

Picture
Example, a Midshipman wants to become an Ensign. He's earned 15xp, so he needs to earn another five xp (to reach the 20 required for Ensign). He also needs to take (and pass!) OTS at the STARFLEET Academy. (Note that passing any test at SFA is worth one XP, and specifically passing OTS gives a bonus of two more.  If the Midshipman passes it with a Distinction, that's an additional two XP, for the total of five that he needed!)
XP Bonuses
  • +1 XP for attending activity/function/meeting etc in Star Trek t-shirt
  • +2 XP for attendance in uniform
  • +1 XP for Academy course “Honors”
  • +2 XP for Academy course “Distinction”
  • +2 XP for passing OTS
  • +5 XP for passing OCC
  • +5 XP for passing Flag Officer courses or any top level course (xx-300, etc)
  • +3 for planning/running a Ship event, landing party, activity, or recruiting table (This gives a total of four XP for this.)
  • +1 XP per hour traveled to Ship or STARFLEET event, activity, etc.

Time In Grade
There must be at least six months between one promotion and the next for each member.  It is expected that it will take more time than six months to qualify for promotion, but the Starship Kidd requires at least six months’ time in grade.

Procedure
The First Officer shall record each member’s Experience Points as they are earned and reported to him. When a threshold has been reached – in other words, when the member has earned the required number of XP to advance, AND if the member has also taken and passed the requisite number of STARFLEET Academy courses, including any specific required courses, AND if it has been at least six months since the member’s last promotion, the XO will recommend the member’s promotion to the Captain.
Upon confirming the information, the Captain shall either promote the candidate or veto the recommendation. The Captain must be prepared to give his reasons for any veto.

When a member of ISS Kidd is promoted, the member will be notified as soon as reasonably practical, and presented with a certificate at the earliest opportunity.

Note: persons transferring to the Starship Kidd from other SFI chapters or units will retain their rank and are encouraged to perform necessary coursework and other requirements. Starting Kidd XP will be at the discretion of the Command Staff but are likely to be at the lowest point total for their current rank.

A link to view the current Experience Point totals is pinned in the #bridge channel on the Kidd's Discord Server.

All Enlisted grades, as well as Midshipmen, do not have a TOS/SNW era insignia.
Enlisted personnel may wear the SFMC/SFSO enlisted insignia on the right front of a TOS/SNW tunic, below the Terran Empire symbol.
